Current pricing
- Stripe Deals: Team seats and usage for storage and artifacts
- Custom Deals: Companies like FAIR and Tahoe are paying 100k+ server license fees, which include the local install, SQS Queue, service accounts, etc.
Pain points with current pricing
What are we trying to solve by updating the pricing?
- Comet competition: Comet is stealing price-sensitive teams by offering $39/user.
- Usage pricing: We need to find usage based pricing to lower the barrier to entry and scale as customer accounts grow.
- Lower sticker shock: Some customers react negatively to a big up front seat license fee.
- Differentiating tiers: Let's explore additional ways to push customers into higher tiers, outside of team seats.
- Startup tier: We want high velocity for teams that are price sensitive. Get them in the door and let them naturally pay more for usage. Some very cheap teams are dropping off immediately.
- Identify leads: Users at companies should be paying, but are quietly flying under the radar and staying in personal free accounts.
- Non-practitioner seats: Customers are asking for view-only seats to add to their license.
Proposed pricing
- Big change = Moving from free trial to freemium. Now users can sign up and invite as many users as they want to a team, and when they really start getting engaged with the product they have to start paying. That's why we are switching to a compute hour limit from a seat limit.
- Pricing page tiers: Free, Startup, Enterprise.
- Usage pricing: Artifacts GB Tracked, Storage GB, and soon Runtime Tracked. In the first iteration, we're focusing on implementing caps, not charging per compute hour. That will come later.
- Enterprise price: This could be whatever the Sales team negotiates. So far we've had deals from $200-$350. We could say internally that our list price is $400.
- Academic: On a separate page, unlimited teams/seats for free. We still enforce usage pricing on these teams for storage/artifacts, and ultimately for compute hours.
- Included in all tiers: No caps on runs, sweeps, reports, artifacts. Artifacts storage and tracking included up to 100GB.
- Local: If you have more than 1 user in local, and 500+ compute hours, you need to go to the enterprise plan to continue using the tool. This is a 10k minimum. If a startup wants a local team for less, we say no. If you need to escalate this, talk to Shawn. We're open to exceptions when we really think small teams need it, but we should really push back because local support is expensive.
